of moon-culminating stars for
the first six months of the ensuing year 1827. T h e method
1 adopt is tho look out for Iwo stars to p r e c e d e , and
two to f o l l o w the nioon’s transit: one of e a c h of these
is io lie as near as possible to the moon i n right ascension j
and the others at not more than 30 o r 40 minufs disiance.
T h e former are for the use of those observatories that are
situated near each other; such as the principal European ones;
and the others are for observatories situated at a considerable
distance from each other, and for travellers in various parts
of the world.
I have also selected stars of g r e a t e r magnitude than have generally been adopted: for1 have found by
experience that the smaller siars are apt to be mistaken j and
several erroneous observations have consequently been recorded. For that purpose I have iaken a greater range in
declination (still however limiting that range to adifference of
2” or 33 only); for I find that unlefs a transit instrument is
very much o u t o f 1e v e l , no great error can arise. In these
latitudes an inclination of the axis, of lot’, would make a

difference of only O’l,Ol in time, when the star is situa[erl 10
from the moon: and as w e approach towards the equator,
these differences vanish altogether.
You w i l l observe that I have inserted Jupiter and Saturn,
w h e n they are near the moon , and when their motion is
r e f r o g r a d e: and also Venus on the day of her occuliafion
in February. I have also inserted the moon’s Declination, as
well as her right ascension: both of which relate to the time
of her culmination at Greenwich. Opposite to the moon 1
have also placed (in a parenthesis) the number of days, from
the time of new moon; which may he occasionally useful.
Those stars, to which an asterisk is annexed, are such
as will pafs through the field of the tslescope (in these latitudes) on the same apparent parallel as the moon j without
any alteration in the posilion of the telescope: and such siars
will prohably undergo an occultation in the course of the evening. They are pointed out as more worthy of observation
fur Gxetl observatories i n this part of Europe.
