MY OPINION
I decided to tell you about John
Lennon because this man
impressed me with his talent,
courage, and intelligence.
Lennon was not only singer,
songwriter, artist, but also a
political activist, whose aim
was struggle for peace in the
whole world.
John Lennon did a lot for the
development of English musical
culture too. He has become the
idol for millions of people.

John Winston Ono Lennon (birth name John Winston Lennon) was
born in war-time Liverpool in England on 9 October 1940 to Julia
and Alfred Lennon. John got his name after his grandfather John
and then-Prime Minister Winston Churchill. After his parents’
divorce John lived with his aunt Mimi and uncle George Smith.

When Lennon was 11, Julia often visited his son, played him Elvis
Presley records, taught him the banjo. She bought John his first
guitar in 1956 on the condition that the guitar be delivered to her
own house, and not Mimi‘s. Aunt Mimi didn’t support the future
star of his musical aspirations and often said: «The guitar's all very
well, John, but you'll never make a living out of it».

the Beatles

John was a smart guy, but he could not bear school and was a poor
student. Lennon failed all school examinations, and was accepted
into the Liverpool College of Art. He failed an annual exam too,
despite help from his friends and future wife Cynthia Powell, and
was thrown out of the college before the final year.

the Beatles
The Quarrymen
At the age of 15, Lennon formed the skiffle group, the Quarrymen
named after Quarry Bank High School. They played half skiffle
and half rock and roll music. Lennon first met Paul McCartney at
the Quarrymen's second concert. McCartney's father thought
that time that Lennon would get his son into trouble.

the Beatles
When Lennon was 17, his mother was struck by a car and killed. It
was a real tragedy for the young man as he loved her very much.
Later he said: «There were five women that were my family.
Five strong, intelligent, beautiful women, five sisters. One
happened to be my mother…»
During this time, the 18-year-old Lennon wrote his first song,
«Hello Little Girl».
1955-1970:From the Quarrymen to
the Beatles
Lennon founded the Beatles in his hometown of Liverpool,
with Paul McCartney and George Harrison. After Ringo
Starr joined the group, they started to be very famous and
successful. People like their music and listen to it throughout
the world.

In 1964-1966 The Beatles were at the height of the fame. In the
interview Lennon said :«We're more popular than Jesus».
Lennon recorded several albums and singles after the Beatles
disbanded. The best-known one was Imagine.
1970-1980: After the Beatles
John Lennon divorced his first wife, Cynthia Powell, and married Yoko
Ono. John loved Yoko so much that he added her surname Ono to his
own name. The remaining members of the group did not accept the
Lennon’s love. Lennon and Ono moved to the United States in 1971,
and settled in New York City.
Political activism
Lennon preached the ideas of equality and brotherhood, peace, and freedom.
His song «Imagine» tells how the real world must be.

President Richard Nixon's administration even tried
to deport Lennon, because of his political views. In 1969 Lennon
wrote a song «Give Peace a Chance». It was an anti-war hymn at
the demonstrations against the Vietnam War in Washington, DC.
Political activism
John Lennon received the Order of the British Empire and
returned it because of disagreement with the policy of Great
Britain in Vietnam.

At around 10:50 pm on 8 December 1980, Lennon was shot dead
by a man named Mark David Chapman who was mentally ill.
Earlier that evening, Lennon had autographed a copy of Double
Fantasy for Chapman. Chapman wanted to kill John Lennon and
to be fame. Instead of fame he is hated by many people.

Yoko Ono said that day: «John loved and prayed for the
human race. Please pray the same for him».

If you are a real fan of The Beatles, then you should visit John
Lennon’s Wall in Prague. The inscriptions on the memorial wall
began to appear soon after the death of John Lennon. It also has
pieces of lyrics from several songs of The Beatles.

one hundred greatest Britons in the history.
