«Who are they Vikings?»

Vikings were Scandinavian sailors in the VIII-IX centuries They
committed sea trips from Vinland to North Africa. In religion the
Vikings, the vast majority were heathens.

Vikings’ clothes in the IX-X I centuries consisted of a long woolen
shirt, short baggy pants, stockings and wraps square.Vikings of the
upper classes wore long pants, socks and capes of bright colours.
Women of high society used to wear long clothes, a bodice and a
skirt.

Like the ancient Germans in the earlier period, the Vikings before
the adoption of Christianity professed traditional Norse religion
with regular sacrifices. The funeral rite was linked with the idea of
the dead ship. Dead soldier's body was cremated on the ship.

Serious success of Danish Vikings began with the conquest of
Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, and the occupation of the western and
northern parts of England.

Every year on the last Tuesday of January an interesting holiday
Aphelio (Up-Helly-Aa) is celebrated in the town of Lerwick on the
Shetland Islands. It marks the day of the first Vikings’ landing on the
Shetland Islands (this happened in the IX century).

This holiday is the largest fire festival in Europe. More than a
thousand people with torches march along the main street of the
city. They are dressed in medieval costumes with Vikings’ portraits,
squads, helmets.

Participants of the festival dance, play traditional folk games.
The apogee of the festival is the burning of a 30-foot Drakkar
(Viking ship).
People down a wooden ship to the sea, burn it with torches.

The grand spectacle symbolizes a funeral procession: so the Vikings
buried their kings.
My opinion




British are conservative people.
I like they keep their traditions.
This ancient holiday is historical.
I think all people must know history of their life.
