Recourses Introduction ~English literature has a centuriesold history. ~Its outstanding works reflected the peculiarities of the national character. ~British writers made a great contribution to the world literature. William Shakespeare (1564-1616) ~William Shakespeare is the most famous English author. ~He had an enormous influence on European literature. ~Shakespeare wrote 37 plays and 2 long poems. ~His plays are the most known in English literature. ~ William Shakespeare works are studied in schools. ~He is the most quoted writer. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) ~Charles Dickens was an English writer and social critic. ~He is one of the greatest novelists. ~ Charles Dickens wrote 15 novels, 5 novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles. ~He wrote about the hard life of poor people in Victorian England. Jane Austen (1775–1817) ~She was a well-known British novelist. ~Jane Austen was knows as the first lady of English literature. ~She was the founder of the socalled novel of manners. ~Among her novels are: “Pride and Prejudice”, “Sense and Sensibility”, “Emma”, “Northanger Abbey”, “Persuasion”. Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) ~Oscar Wilde is a famous English writer of the 19th century, poet, critic and novelist. ~Nowadays Oscar Wilde is regarded as the great playwright of the Victorian Era. ~Wilde wrote fairy-stories for his children. ~His books are read and his plays are staged in many countries and in many languages. Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (1859-1930) ~Arthur Conan Doyle was a famous British writer. ~He wrote detective stories, historic novels, war books. ~ Arthur Conan Doyle is known by the series of books about Sherlock Holmes. ~They are among the favorite books of English literature. Agatha Christie (1890-1976) ~The most famous English writer of romantic and crime novels. ~She is now considered to be the best selling writer ever. ~Agatha Christie wrote not only detective stories, but also stories, she published them under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. ~On the basis of her books filmed 27 movies. Lewis Carroll (1832 -1898) ~Lewis Carroll was a remarkable English writer, mathematician, philosopher and a deacon. ~He wrote short stories and poems. ~By 1854, all serious English publishing houses were accepting them. ~His most famous works is the fairy-tale “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”. ~It is still a favourite children's book. Jack London (1876 - 1916 ) ~Jack London is one of the most prominent American writers. ~He is the author of adventure novels. ~Jack London is writing career lasted 16 years. ~During this period he published 50 books: short stories, novels and essays. ~Jack London described the severe life and struggle of people against nature. Conclusion Great Britain gave the world a lot of talented people. Many famous writers were born in Britain.All these prominent English writers made a great contribution to the world literature. The majority of my friends read British writers. We learn from their books how to think, to live in harmony with the people and ourselves to love and make our world better.
