Abstract
_________________________________________________________________
[Class 106 (iii).] A combined eddy-current type speedometer and
partial and general distance totalizers has the magnetic circuit
completed outside the drag bell by a soft iron disc, on the front side
of which is secured a U-shape frame carrying in its side faces the
ends of the shafts of the totalizers and on the back side of which is
secured a rear frame forming a bearing for a shaft carrying the magnet
and for shafts actuating pawls operating the totalizers.
The apparatus is similar in many respects to that described in
Specification 290,218, [Class 106 (iii), Fares and c
The rotating shaft 16 rotates the crossshaped permanent magnet 17 to
actuate the metal drag bell 27, the shaft 26 of which carries the
index 73 moving over the dial 74 which is secured by pillars 75 to a
soft- iron disc 30 closing the magnetic circuit of the magnet 17
through the flat bottom of the bell 27.
To the front of the disc 30 is secured the iron U-shaped frame 1
carrying in the upper branches 2b, 3b of its side faces the shaft 8 of
the partial totalizer and c. carrying in the lower branches 2a, 3a of
its side faces the shaft 7 of the general totalizer.
The partial totalizer may be omitted if desired.
To the back of the disc 30 is secured a rear frame 82 supporting the
shaft 16 and the shafts 9a, 9b having secured to them wheels 19a, 19b,
respectively, rotated by a worm 18 on the shaft 16.

We, THE BRITISiH THOMSON-HOUSTON COMPANY LIMITED, a British Company
having its registered office at Crown House, Aldwych, London, W[[C]]
2, and 5S LEONARD GRIFFITHS, of "I enningfon ", 78, Biggin Hall
Crescent, Coventry, in the County of Warwick, a British subject, do
hereby declare the nature of this invention to be as follows:For
indicating the speed of, for example, motor driven vehicles, it is
known to employ an electric tachometer generator the voltage of which
is caused to give the required speed indication.
It is also known to employ a speed reduction gear driven from some
part of the vehicle or its engine, such reduction gear being employed
to give an indication of distance travelled or as a revolition
counter.
According to the invention we combine the reduction gearing of the
revolution indicator with the tachometer generator.
This is accomplished by extending the spindle of the tachometer
generator and providing a worm gear on the extension and providing a
bracket secured to a base plate, the bracket supporting suitable
reduction gearing engaging the worm gear on the spindle extension, the
base plate being secured to the end-plate of the generator.
The accompanying drawing illustrates one method in accordance with the
invention of combining the distance registering gearing with an
electrical generator of the type referred to in our Patent Application
No. 1274 of 1932 (Serial No.
39564G4). Fig. 1 is a sectional view along the extended end of the
generator spindle and Fig. 2 is an end view of the reduction gearing.
From the drawing it will be seen that the distance registering device
is mounted on the end plate of the generator and that the generator
shaft is extended.
Referring to the drawing, a baseplate 1 is secured to the endplate
fixing bolts 7 of the tachometer generator, and this baseplate carries
a bracket 2 supporting a reduction gear 3 having at one end a
relatively large spur gear and at the other end a worm gear. The spur
gear engages a worm gear 4 on the generator shaft extension 8, whilst
the worm gear 3 engages a spur gear 5 supported on a spindle 6 secured
to the baseplate 1.
This reduction gear provides for a ratio of 3600: 1, and it is
proposed to use this in conjunction with a generator indicating 30 m
[[p]]h. road speed at 1800 R[[P]]M; thus one revolution of the gear
wheel 5 corresponds to a distance of one mile .
The gear wheel 5 is provided with an extension suitable for use in
conjunction with a flexible drive and mechanical conl nection to a
counter mechanism if orthodox design. It will be apparent. that if
desirable the ratio may be reduced to 360: 1, in order to register
1[10th of a mile , or any other ratio may be employed depending on the
various factors to be considered.
In its application to commoreial vehicles, it is anticipated that the
flexible drive from the gear 5 would be quite short and that the
counter would be located on the side of the chassis where it can be
examined when required. However, in the event of the counter or
mileage indicator being mounted on the dash board or in the driver's
cabin, in which case a long flexible drive would be necessary, it may
be desirable to fit a cam on the gear 5 which would serve to close a pair of contacts, say once each revolution, the contacts being in
circuit with an electro-magnetic type of counter.

subject, do hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what
manner the. same is to be performed, to lie particularly described and
ascertained in and by the following statement:For indicating- the speed of, -for example, motor driven vehieles,, it
iS known to employ an electric tachometer generator the voltage of
which is caused to give the required speed indication.
It is also known to employ a speed j;5 reduction gear driven from some
part of the vehicle or its engine, such reduction gear operating a
revolution counter to give an indication of distance travelled.
It has also been proposed to actuate a distance indicator by means of
a separate circuit extending from the tachometer generator which is
completed periodically through the operation of reduction gearing
driven from the armature spindle.
According to the invention we combine the reduction gear of the
revolution counter with the tachometer generator by securing a- base
plate. to the end-plate of the generator and supporting by a bracket
on the base plate reduction gear driven by a worm mounted on an
e'xtension of the generator spindle. -Preferably the gear wheel of the
final reduction is provided with an extension suitable for-connection
to a flexible drive for the revolution counter.
The drawing filed with the Provisional Specification illustrates one
method in accordance with the invention of com4 ,0 bining the
reduction ' gearing of the revolution counter with an electrical
generator of the type referred to in our Patent Application No. 1274
of 1932 (Serial No. 395,404). Fig. 1 of the drawing is a sectional
view along the extended end of- the generator spindle, and Fig. 2 is
an end view of the reduction gearing. From the drawing it will be seen
that the distance registering device is mounted on the endplate of the
generator and that the generator shaft is extended.
Referring to the drawing, a baseplate 1 is secured to the endpiate
fixing bolts' 7 of the tachometer 'generator, and this baseplate
carries a bracket 2 supporting a reduction gear 3- having at one end a
relatively large worm wheel and at the other end a worm. The worm
wheel rao engages a worm 4 on the generator spindle extension 8,
whilst the worm of 3 engages a worm wheel 5 supported on a spindle 6
secured to the baseplate 1 This reduction gear is preferably designed
to provide a ratio of 3600-: 1, and to be used in conjunction with a
generator indicating 30 m [[p]]h. road speed at 1800 -R[[P]]PM; in
vlhich case one revolutioii of the gear wheel 5 would correspond to a
distance of one mile . The gear wheel.5 70 is provided with an
extension suitable tow -use, in conjunction with a flexible drive and
mechanical connection to a counter mechanism of orthodox design. tIt
will be. apparent that if desirable the 75, ratio may be reduced to
360: 1, in order to register 1/10th of a mile , or any other ratio may
be employed depending on the various factors to be considered.
In its application to commercial 80 vehicles, it is anticipated that
the flexible drive from the -gear a would be quite short and that the
counter would be located on the. side of the chassis where it can be
examined when required. However, in the event of the counter or
mileage indicator being mounted.on the dash board or in the driver's
cabin, instead of the long flexible drive which would then be
necessary., it nRay be desirable to fit go a cam on the gear 5 which
would serve to close a pair of contacts, say once each revolution,
thle contacts being in circuit with an electro-magnetic type of
counter.
Having now particularly described and 95 ascertained the nature of our
said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, we
declare that what we claim -is:1. A tachometer generator for giving
ion speed indication having a base plate secured to the endplate of
the generator and a bracket on the baseplate supporting reduction gear
driven by a worm mounted on an extension of the generator spindle 1i0
for operating a revolution counter.

2. A tachometer according to Claim 1, in which the reduction gear
comprises worm wheel engaging the worm on the' spindle and coupled to
a worm engaging ii0 a worm wheel supported on a spindle secured to the
baseplate.
3. For indicating the speed and mileage of a motor driven vehicle a
tachometer generator driven by the motor and Aj1 heaving knov-n
electrical connections by which the speed is indicated, and a
redutction gearing driven by a worm on an extension of the tachometer
spindle and mounted -on a base supported by the 120 tachometer
endplate, the final reduction being generated in a spindle provided
with means for connecting by a flexible drive to known counting
mechanism by which the mileage is indicated. 125
