[Class 120 (ii).] In a spinning or twisting machine comprising a frame
10, Fig.
1, having a plurality of spindles 13 mounted along each side thereof,
and a driving cylinder 12 for said spindles mounted in the frame,
bands are provided for driving the pulleys, each band having a
straight run across the machine and under the driving cylinder and an
indirect run which is looped upwardly into driving engagement with the
cylinder.

As separate pulleys 64, 65 are provided for each band and these
pulleys are entirely open at one side, this construction permits a
continuous band D woven in one piece to be employed and to be easily
placed in position.
Each pulley 64 is mounted on an arm 66 pivoted on a hub 67 and
counterweighted by a weight W so that the belt D is tensioned by the
pulley.
Inward movement of the arm 66 is limited by a lug 70 and stop 71.
The upper guide pulleys 65 are mounted on arms 75 secured on rods 76
by screws 77 and may be adjusted to suit the length of the band D.
The Specification as open to inspection under Sect.
91 comprises also a motor M adjustably mounted within the base portion
of the frame, and connected by belts 22, Fig.
1 (Cancelled), to the cylinder 12, the motor being mounted upon a
support normally rigidly fixed to the frame but vertically adjustable
thereon.
The support comprises end frames 39 slidable vertically in guideways
in the frame 10 and adapted to be secured in a vertically adjusted
position by bolts 41.
Bars 37 secured in depending portions 38 of the brackets 39 support
members 31 which have slots to receive the clamping bolts of the
motor.
A nut 44 with an enlarged head 45 is mounted in each bracket 39 and
receives a supporting screw 50 depending from the spindle rail 11.

The pulley 21 on the motor drives by the belts 22 the pulley 23 on the
shaft 24 of the cylinder 12, the drive being enclosed by a casing 25.
Bands 17 pass over the cylinder 12 and each drive two spindles.
Each band has a straight run across the machine under the cylinder 12
and then passes round the spindles, around guide pulleys 18 and over
the cylinder 12.
This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.

Improved Spinning or Twisting Gachine.
corporation organized and existing under the laws of the State of
Massachusetts, United States of America, located at Whitinsville,
State of Massachusetts, United States of America, do hereby declare
the nature of this invention and in. what manner the same is to be
performed, to be particularly described and jo ascertained in and by
the following statement:
This invention relates to machines for spinning or twisting textile
fibres of the kind comprising a frame having a -1E plurality of
spindles mounted along each side thereof and a driving cylinder for
said spindles mounted in said frame.
The object of the invention is to provide improved means for driving
the -20 spindles from said driving cylinder.
According to the present invention a plurality of bands are provided
for driving the spindles, each spindle driving band having a straight
run from one spindle to another directly across the machine and below
the cylinder and having an indirect run frem side to side of said
machine with a portion of said indirect run guided and lo6ped upwardly
:30 into driving engagement with the cylinder.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood reference is
made to the accompanying drawings which illustrate by way of example
an embodiment of the invention and in which:Fig. 1 is a sectional end
elevation of a spinning or twisting frame according to the present
invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of certain parts shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, parts of a spinning or twisting machine are
shown comprising an end frame member 10, :45 spindle rails 11, a
driving cylinder 12, and a plurality of spindles 13 having spindle
blades 14 provided with whirls 15.
The cylinder 12 is mounted in the _ff0 upper part of the frame,
substantially above the plane of the whirls 15, and the cylinder 12 is
con Trncted to the spindles by a plurality of hands I, each driving
[Price 1/-] two spindles at each side of the machine, and thus driving
four spindles and rotating all of the spindles at the same speed and
in the same direction. The band ID extends in a straight run, as
indicated at 60, directly across the frame from one of the spindles on
one side to a correspondingly positioned spindle on the other side,
this straight run being substantially below the cylinder 12 and out of
contact therewith.
The upper run 62 of the band D extends 6; from the second spindle on
each side around a lower guide pulley 64 and over an upper guide
pulley 65, and then under the driving cylinder 12 and in driving
contact therewith. 70 Each lower drive pulley 64 is mounted on an arm
66, pivoted on a hub or bearing menmiber 67, which in turn is
supported on a square shaft 68 held in fixed brackets 69. A weight W
is formed integral with 75 the arm 66 and tends to swing the guide
pulley 64 in a direction to tension the band D. A lug 70 on the arm 66
engages a stop or abutment 71 on a projecting portion of the hub or
bearing member 67 80 and thus limits swinging movement of each pulley
64 toward the adjacent spindle 13.
It will be noted that the lower guide pulleys 64 engage the band D
substantially in the plane of the straight run thereof, or in the
plane of the whirls 16.

ends of arms 75, adjustably secured to cross rods 76 by set screws

length of lie band D and may be semured in adjusted position by g

It will be noted that the pulleys 65 are on the opposite side of the
axis of the cylinder shaft from the pulleys 64 and from the straight
run of the belt, and that L00 they are so positioned that the band D
engages the driving cylinder 12 for substantially half of the
circumference of the cylinder, thus having a very effective driving
contact therewith. l_ The band D is preferably woven as a 400,590 No.

sides of the machine, so that the direction of rotation of the
cylinder 12 may be reversed and the spindles may be driven in either
direction, under identical driving conditions and at the same speeI.
The fact that the straight run 60 of the band D is below. and-beypnd
the periphery of the, cylinder 12: permits the use of a cylinder made
in long sections, instead of necessitating the use of a separate
driving pulley for each band, as has been necessary in certain
previous driving constructions.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our
said invention and in what manner the same is to be

performed, we declare that what we claim
IS:-:
1. In a spinning or twisting machine of the kind comprising a frame
having a plurality of spindles mounted along each side thereof and a
driving cylinder for said spindles mounted in said frame, the feature
that a plurality of bands are provided for driving the spindles, each
spindle-driving band having a straight run from one spindle to another
directly across the machine and below the cylinder, and having an
indirect, run from side to side of said machine, with a portion of
said indirect run guided and looped upward into driving engagement
with the cylinder.
-45 2> In a spinning or twisting machine as specified in claim 1, the
feature that the indirect run of each spindle-driving band is guided
to engage a substantial arc of said driving cylinder on the samey side
of the axis of said Bylinder as said straight run.
3. In a spinning or twisting machine as specified in Claim 2, the
feature that the indirect run of said band engages the -55 driving
cylinder for substantially one half of the circumference thereof.
t 4. In a spinning or twisting machine E- as specified in Claims 2 or
3, the feature.

5. In a spinning or twisting machine - as specified in Claim 4, the
feature that l one guide pulley with adjustable fixed bearing and one
guide pulley Ivith a 65 movable bearing is provided at each side of
the driving cylinder.
6. In a spinning or twisting nmachine as specified in Claim 5, the
feature that the adjustably fixed pulleys are mounted 70 on supporting
arms which are each angularly adjustable about a fined axis, and that
means is provided to hold said arms in angularly adjusted position.
7. In a spinning or twisting machine 75 as specified in Claims 5 or 6,
the feature that one guide pulley in each pair engages the band
substantially in the plane of the straight run of the spindle band,
and that the other guide pulley of each pair 80 engages the band
beyond the axis of the cylinder, considered with respect to the
straight run of said band.
8. In a spinning or twisting machine as specified in Claim 7, the
feature

substantially in the plane of the straight run thereof and that the
adjust- ably fixed pulleys are mounted in loops of the spindle bands
and are positioned 90 beyond the axis of the driving cylinder.

11. Means for driving the spindles of a spinning or twisting machine
