in London. Sept. 2, 1932, No. 24494. [Class 65 (i).] Mechanism for
automatically
closing a collapsable gate, shutter or the like
comprises a lever, pivoted on an intermediate or forward upright of
the gate and having a sliding rocking connection with another upright
in the rear part of the gate or with some fixed support, and a
spring-urged rod pivotally connected to a part of the lever extending
beyond the sliding connection. The mechanism is shown applied to a
lazy-tongs gate, in which the spring is enclosed in a cylinder A fixed
to the rear upright J of the gate. A lever C is pivoted at L to an
intermediate upright M of the gate, and its free end passes through a
long slot in a member D fixed to the upright J and is pivotally
connected to a rod B which is pulled downwards by the spring in the
cylinder A to force the gate to the closed position shown; the lever C
has two pins F fixed in it to guide it while it slides up the slot in
member D during opening of the gate. Preferably a second lever C<1> is
provided, arranged symmetrically with the lever C on the pivot L and
engaging in a similar way a member D<1> on a forward upright of the
gate.

PROVISIONAL SPECIFICATION.
Improvement relating to Closing of Collapsible Gates, Shutters and the
like.
We, Porr=.r RAX GATE COMPANY INmiTED, Wilton Works, Shepperton Road,
London, N. 1, British Company, and FREDERICK GEORGE CoLnFAN (British),
104, Croydon Road, Anerley, S[[E]] 20, Commercial Traveller, do hereby
declare the nature of this invention to be as follows:This invention
relates to the closing of collapsible gates, shutters and the like.
The object of this invention is to provide means for automatically
closing collapsible gates, shutters and the like ensuring that same
are not left open.
According to this invention, a lazytong lever is fitted to the gate,
shutter or the like, one arm of the lazytong lever being connected to
a rod which is fitted into a cylinder. At the end of this rod is fixed
a plunger which is contained in the cylinder, a spring being placed
round the rod inside the cylinder. The front of the lazytong lever is
fixed to the front portion of the gate. The pressure of the spring,
which is in compression in the cylinder when the gate is open,
operating through the leverage obtained by the use of lazytong lever,
causes the gate, door or shutter to close.

1, and FREDERICK GEORGE COLEMAN, 104, Croydon Road, Anerley, London,
S[[E]] 20, British, do hereby declare the nature of this invention
land in what manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly
described and ascertained in and by the following statementThe invention is an improvement in the operation of collapsible gates,
shutters and the like and has for its object an improvement in the
automatic operation of the closing of the opening in which gates are
fitted ensuring that the gates are not left open.
Our invention relates to gate closers in which the gate or the like is
closed by spring means acting through a lever one end of which is
pivotted to an upright member of the gate structure and the other has
a sliding rocking connection with a. guide piece which may be carried
by the rear member of the gate structure [Price 11-] I liWi,,.

or by some fixed part such as a giate post, the spring means acting to
urge the lever to turn so as to increase its inclination to the
vertical and thus move the gate to its closed condition.
According to our invention, the lever projects beyond the guide piece
and a spring-pressed rod acts directly upon this projecting portion.
In a preferred form of our invention, we use an additional lever
pivotted in common with the forward end of the before mentioned lever
and extending forwardly therefrom so as to be in symmetrical relation
witlE that lever, its f orward end having a sliding rocking engagement
with another guide piece suitably placed on a forward part of the
gate.
We will now describe one form of our invention with reference to the
accompanying drawings in which:

In carrying out our iwvention accordingrt-o this-form, slotted guide
pieces are fixed to gate, guide piece DI at the back of gate and:.
guide piece E at the most suitable position at firohl part of gate.
Two levers C inclined equally as shewn have a common central pivot on
an upright member of the gate structure and the upper ends of these
levers project through the slots of the guide pieces and. are held in
slidifig roblking'relationship- with the guide pieces by projecting
rivets F. The end of the pivotted lever at the back of the gate
projects beyond the guide piece and is -pivotally connected to a rod B
whiclh is- fitted in a cylinder A. At the eild of this rod B is fixed
a piston G, which slides 'in the cylinder A. Round the- rod B., and.
between the piston and the cover of the cylinder A, is fitted a spring
IE. Whienthe gate is left open the spring Hi is in compression in the
cylinder A.
The cylinder A is fixed to back uprights.J of gate by bracket K. The
position of the pivotted levers when gate is left open is shewn in
Fig. 1. The position of the pivotted leveis when gate is closed is
shownin Fig. 2. - Raving now particularly described and ascertained
the nature of our said inventio, and in w-hat manner the same is to be
performed,
we
declare
that what we claim is (1) Means for
automatically closing a coll1psible gate, shutter or the like,
cornpryising la lever pivotted upon an inlerilediate or forwardl
upright of the gate structure and having a sliding rocking (
connection with-another gate upriiht in thie rear part of the gate
orwfth some fixed spuport and. a spring urged rod pivotally connected
to
a part of the--lever extending beyond the sliding rocking
connection.
