Abstract

400,987. "Under-and-over" sporting guns. SCHOLBERG, P., 24, Rue
Morinval, Liege, Belgium. May 5, 1932, No. 12952. Convention date,
Feb. 26. [Class 119.] The barrel-block 2 is removably secured to the
casing 1 at the fore-end of the stock by lateral grooves or ribs 8 on
the block which engage or coincide with corresponding ribs or grooves
on the casing, a strap or stirrup being movable on the casing to lock
the parts after assembly. Figs. 1 and 3 show one construction in which
the barrel-block is inserted vertically in a U-shaped casing 1 and
locked by a sliding cover-strap 6. In the form shown in Fig. 6, the
grooves 10 in the casing 1 receive projections on a barrel-block which
is slidden endwise into position and locked by a stirrup 15 which is
inserted from below to engage registering vertical grooves in the
casing and block.

PATENT 3,PE42IF2L rN-'
Convention Date (Belgium): Feb. 26,1932. 4009987 Application Date (in
United Kingdom): May 5, 1932. No. 12,952/32.
Complete Accepted: Nov. 6, 1933.
COMPLETE SPECIFICATION.
Improvements in or relating
'Under-and-over Type.
to
Double-barrel Sporting Guns of the
I, PAUL SCoOLBBWG, of 24, Rue Morinval, Liege, Belgium, a Belgian
Subject, do hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what
manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly described and
ascertained in and by the following statement:This invention relates to double-barrel sporting guns of the type
wherein the barrels are superposed, that is to say of the type
generally known as under-andover guns.
According to the said invention the barrels are carried by a block or
the like at their breech ends, said block being removably secured
within a housing, located at the fore-end of the stock, by lateral
ribs or grooves on the said block adapted to engage or coincide with
grooves or ribs in the walls of the said housing, and a strap or
stirrup carried by or in the housing and engaging with the block.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying
drawings wherein:

Figure 3 is an elevation of the breech end of the barrels.
Figure 4 is a section on the line A-B figure 1.
Figure 5 is an end elevation and side elevation of the breech end of
the barrels according to an alternative or modification of the
invention, and Figure 6 is an end elevation and side elevation of the
breech-block housing adapted to carry the barrels shown in Figure 5.
In Figures 1-4 of the said drawings the breech ends of two superposed
barrels 7 are carried within a block 2 adapted to be inserted into;
and removably locked within, a substantially U-sectioned breech-block
housing 1 carried on the foreend of the stock of the gun.
The housing 1 is provided internally and at its forward end with a
system of parallel ribs 3 which are located in planes at right angles
to its axis and extend [Price I!-1.
around its entire internal periphery. Externally, the upper end of the
housing is 55 provided, one on either side, with two grooves 4 located
parallel to the upper edges of the said housing and extending
rearwardly from its forward end. The inwardly projecting ears 5 of a
curved strap 60 6 are adapted to engage with the said grooves 4 so
that the said strap is slidably mounted upon the breech-block housing.
The block 2 carrying the barrels 7 is provided externally with a
system of ribs 65 8 which extend around the lower portion of its
periphery and are located in planes at right angles to the axes of the
barrels 7. These ribs 8 are of the same dimensions as the spaces
between the ribs 33 on 70 the internal periphery of the breechblock
housing, and are so spaced apart that the grooves between them may
receive the said ribs 3.
To assemble the barrels 7 to the breechblock housing 1, the strap 6 is
displaced towards the rear or stock-end of the latter from above the
ribs 3. The block 2 is then lowered into the forward end of the
housing so that the ribs 8 on the said 80 block enter and fit within
the spaces between the ribs 3 on the internal periphery of the
housing, thus preventing the block from being displaced lengthwise of
the housing. The strap 6 is then pushed 85 forward to its initial
position so that its under surface engages or bears against the top of
the block and prevents the latter from being displaced vertically
within the housing. Thus the barrels are rigidly 90 secured to the
breech-block housing.
In the modification shown in Figures 5 and 6 of the drawings the
forward. or barrel-end of the breech-block housing 1 is in the form of
a closed ring 9 into which 95 the barrel block is inserted by
lengthwise movement.
The sides of the ring 9 are provided with a system of grooves
disposed parallel to the bottom of the housing, said 100 grooves
either side being intersected at right angles by two grooves
extending upwardly from two apertures 12 pierced through the bottom
the ring.
10
on
11
of
Each side of the barrel block 2 is provided 105 with a system of ribs
13 adapted, when the 400,987 barrels are fixed in position, to engage
with the grooves 10 in the ring 9. -These ribs 13 are broken away at
their approximate centres so as to form two paths or passages 14
located at right angles to the ribs 13, said passages being adapted to
be brought into alignment with the upwardly extending grooves 11 when
the block 2 is inserted into the ring 9. The block and barrels are
then locked in position by passing a U-shaped stirrup or bolt through
the apertures 12 so that its arms engage partially within the grooves
1-1 in the ring and partially within the pQ paisspges 14 in.The barrel
block to lock the barrels rigidly to the breech-block housing.
Having now particularly described and -ascertained the nature of my
said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I
declare that what I claim.is:- - - 1. An under-and-over double-barrel
sporting gun, wherein the barrels are carried by a block or the like
at their breech ends, said block being removably secured.
within a housing, located at the fore-end of the stock, by lateral
ribs or grooves on said block. adapted to engage or coincide with
grooves or ribs in the walls of said housing, and a strap or stirrup
carried by or in the housing and engaging with the block.
2. An under-and-over double-barrel
Claims
_________________________________________________________________
3Q sporting gun according to Claim 1,wherein the barrel block is
provided with a plurality of lateral ribs adapted to engage with
complementary vertical grooves in the walls of a U-section housing,
located at the fore-end of the stock, said housing having a strap
across its open side which, when the barrel block has been placed in
position, is adapted to be moved into engagement with the top side of
said
block. i 3. An under-and-over double-barrel sporting gun
according to Claim 1, wherein the barrel block is provided with a
plurality of lateral horizontal ribs, the middle of each of which is
removed or broken away and the housing on the foreend-of the stock is
provided,
on
each
of its -vertical- internal surfaces, with
complementary horizontal grooves and a vertical groove intersecting
said horizontal 55 grooves, the barrels being secured in position by
inserting the block endwise into the housing, the ribs on the former
entering the grooves in the latter, until the spaces in such ribs
coincide with the vertical grooves in said housing,-and inserting a
U-shaped stirrup through thie underside of the housing so that its
armis enter said vertical grooves, said arms being of such thickness
that they engage a the spaces between the ribs on the barrel block and
thereby lock the barrels rigidly to the stock.- 4. An, under-and-over
double-barrel
sporting
gun substantially as described 70 with
reference to Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the accompanying drawings.
5. An under-and-over double-barrel sporting gun substantially as
described with reference to Figures 5 and 6 of the 75 accompanying
drawings.Dated this 4th day of May, 1932.ARTHUR SADLER, Chartered
