Wolverhampton, GORRINGE, R. C., 32, Compton Road, Wimbledon, and
GAMBRELL, H. W., 13c, Park Road, Chiswick, both in London. June 10,
1932, Nos. 16491 and 24732. [Class 39 (ii).] A portable electric lamp
adapted to throw a beam of light is provided with a magnetic compass
needle 11 pivoted coaxially with the beam, with the compass scale 9
disposed around the periphery of the beam, so that the compass is
illuminated without obstructing the beam. The needle 11 is pivoted on
a pin 12 supported by a bar 13 from the scale 9, the N and S arms of
the needle preferably being of dissimilar form, for example the N arm
may be pierced by a small hole. The compass is mounted within a cap 8
which screws on an intermediate sleeve 5 containing the reflector 6,
with a glass disc 10 fitted above the compass needle. A cover 14
hinged to the cap 8 is provided with a mirror on its underside, and on
its upper side is hinged the gnomon 18 of a sundial arranged to lie
flat on the surface when not in use. When raised the gnomon is
retained in position by a blade spring bearing on its hinge. The
sleeve 5 is formed with a diagonal slot 7 which engages a pin 4 on the
battery casing 1 to provide a focusing adjustment. A removable bottom
end-cap 21 screwed on to the body 1 is fitted with clips 22 to carry a
spare bulb 23. The hinge-pin 15 of the cover 14 is formed with an
external loop 16 by which the torch may be suspended.

the nature of this invention to be as follows:This invention relates
to electric torches such as are used by campers, boyscouts and the
like, and also to lamps for cycles or other vehicles, and has for its
object to provide a torch which can be utilised for a number of
different purposes.
This invention consists in the combination of a torch of the focussing
or spotlight type with a compass, a signalling switch, and a mirror
The invention also provides means for carrying a spare lamp or lamps
within the casing of the torch.
In carrying this invention into effect according to one form, we
provide a torch having a cylindrical body portion adapted to contain
the electric batteries, which provide the current for the lamp.
The base of this cylindrical portion is provided with a cap which may
be screwed or otherwise secured to the body and which contains a
spring adapted to press the battery into contact with the lamp base
Within the bottom cap we provide one or more pairs of clips adapted to
hold a spare lamp or lamps These clips may be enclosed in a metallic
cap removably secured to the inside of the bottom cap to protect the
lamps The upper end of the cylindrical body is provided with a
rotatable cap containing a parabolic reflector and having a spiral
slot in the side engaging a pin in the body so that any rotary
movement of the cap relative to the body causes the lamp to move along
the major axis of the reflector, thus varying the dispersion of the
beam of light from the lamp The rotatable cap is provided with a glass
or lens at its outer end and under this cap we may mount a
compass-needle, the points of the compass being marked on the interior
of the cap.
The needle may be pivoted on a bearing carried by a narrow bar fixed
to the sides of the cap which will not interfere to any appreciable
extent with the light from the lamp The cap is provided with a hinged
cover which protects the glass and mav be fitted in its interior with
a circular mirror The pin of the hinge is provided with an external
loop which may be utilised for hanging the torch to the belt of the
wearer when not in use or to a fixed hook when it is desired to use
the mirror or lamp The switch for the lamp has three definite
positions, one for " off ", another for " on " and an intermediate
position in which by depressing the switch button the lamp circuit is
completed so long as the pressure is maintained In this position the
lamp may be used for sending morse signals in the dark.
The mirror may be utilised for signalling in the daylight.
In order to ascertain whether the lamp is on or off without opening
the hinged lid or mirror one or more small holes may be provided in
the rim of the lid or other suitable position for inspection purposes.

In carrying the invention into effect according to one form, we employ
a torch as described in detail in the aforesaid co-pending Application
No.
16,491/32, and in the hinged cover thereof we embody a sundial The
time graduations-may be marked on the outside of the cover, and the
gnomon may be mounted thereon The gnomon may be fixed rigidly to the
cover; alternatively it may be hinged thereto, and be marked to show
when it is drawn out to the correct inclination for use When not in
use it may then be folded back against the cover, and it may be
received in a slot therein.

the nature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be
performed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the
following statement:This -invention relates to portable elec - greater than tric lamps for
example to vehicle lamps and han 4 torches intended for use in the
country at night.
According to the invention we provide a portable electric lamp adapted
to throw e 5 a beam of light and -having a magnetic compass needle
mounted on a pivot fixed coaxially in the beam of light and having a
compass scale fixedly disposed around -the periphery of the beam
whereby
the compass is illuminated by the beam 70 while not
substantially obstructing the beam.
The compass scale may be marked externally on a cylinder around the
periphery, so that the light from the torch 75 shines directly on it
The pivot should be supported so that light is not obstriicted, and
preferably we employ a narrow bar -spanning the beam for this purpose
The North and South arms of 80 the compass needle are preferably made
dissimilar in form (as opposed to colour) so that they may be
distinguished apart when viewed with the light behind them.
For example, the North arm may be 85 pierced with a small hole.
An
embodiment-of the invention in an electric hand torchb is
illustrated in the accompanying drawing Fig 1 shows the cylindrical
body which holds the battery, 9 o and carries the limp 2, the switch 3
and a pin 4 The switch 3 has an " on " position, an " off " position,
and an intermediate position for signalling where the lamp is
illuminated only while-the button 95 is depressed The part 5 carries
the reflector 6, shown dotted, and a diagonal 402,164 slot 7 is
adapted to slide on pin 4 when the part 5 is assembled on the body 1
and rotated Thus focussing adjustment of the reflector relative to the
lamp is obtained.
The cap 8 screws on to the part 5, and carries the compass scale 9 and
the glass The magnetic compass needle 11 is pivoted on a pin 12
supported by a bar 13 io from the scale 9.
A sundial scale and gnomon are orientated correctly in relation to the
compass scale When the torch is rotated into the position where the
Magnetic North mark of the compass scale comes opposite the North
pointer of the magnetic needle, the gnomon should point to the True
North.
Correct magnetic variation is allowed for the locality in which the
torch is intended to be used.
The hinged cover 14 carries a mirror on the inside and a sundial on
the outside The pin of the hinge 15 is formed into an external loop 16
which may be used to hang up the torch The spring clip 17 serves to
hold the cover closed.
The sundial scale is marked on the outside surface of the hinged cover
14 as seen in the plan view, Fig 2 The 3 o gnomon 18 is hinged to lie
flat on the surface when not in use The perpendicular position is
determined by a flat spring 19 This flat spring engages a flat on the
base of the hinge, as may be seen from Fig 3 which is a part sectional
view on AA of Fig 1.
A small hole 20 in the rim of the hinged cover 14 shows whether the
lamp is alight when the cover is closed.
The base 21, which screws on to the body 1, is fitted with clips 22 to
carry a spare bulb 23.
The spare bulb is protected by a cover 24, held by clips 25, which
cover also serves to support spring 26 which contacts with the bottom
of the battery.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our
said invention and in what manner the same is to to be performed, we
declare that what we

claim is:1 A portable electric lamp adapted to throw a beam of light and having
a magnetic compass needle mounted on a pivot fixed coaxially in the
beam of light and having a compass scale fixedly disposed around the
periphery of the beam whereby the compass is illuminated by the beam
while not substantially obstructing the beam.
2 An electric lamp according to Claim 1, the compass scale being
marked internally on a cylinder around the periphery of the beam so as
to be illuminated by direct light, 65

needle pivot being supported by a narrow bar spanning the beam,

South arms of the compass needle being dissimilar in form.

reflector adapted to be adjusted to focus its beam.

signalling position in which the lamp is illuminated when a button is

cover 85 adapted to cover the aperture through which the light issues
from the lamp.

hinged cover to show when the lamp is alight 90

constructed and arranged substantially as described with reference to
