Abstract

21407.
[Class 122 (v).] Oil seal comprises a leather ring b secured in a case
a by means of a washer c and a ring d which is secured by turning over
the edge a <2> of the case.
The shaft-engaging portion of the ring b is bevelled at x and is
pressed on to the shaft by the frusto-conoidal skirt e <1> of a ring e
pressed axially by an undulated spring.
The portion e <1> is extended beyond the end of the leather, and its
extreme end is bevelled and bears on the shaft so as to shear the oil
or dust film and so prevent the ingress of undesirable matter.
Specification 270,960, [Class 122 (v)], is referred to.

COMPLETE SPECIFICATION.
Improvements
Bodies.
in
and
relating to Packing Devices for Shafts and like
We, WILLIAM MURRAY, a, British subject, and CHARLES WESTON AND
COMPANY, I 1 MITED, a company organized under the laws of Great
Britain, both of 2, Portsmouth Street, Xingsway, London, W.C 2, do
hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what manner the
same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained
in and by the following statement:This invention relates to packing devices or " oil seals " for shafts
or like bodies, and it refers to devices designed more particularly
for use in preventing oil leakage along a shaft.
The invention refers to packing devices for shafts of the type
comprising a leather or other packing ring of L-shaped crosssectional
outline, having the outer face of the shaft engaging member of the
leather bevelled, and a frusto-conoidal ring pressed axially by a
spring against the leather.
It has been proposed in the specification
2,5 of Letters Patent No 270,96 (} to provide a packing device of this
type in which that part of the frusto-conoidal ring en-la-ing the
outer coned end of the shaftengaging member of the packing is s O
extenlded beyond the point of contact with the packing.
According to the present invention, in order to shear the oil and dust
film and so prevent the ingress of undesirable 23 matter, that part of
the
frusto-conoidal ring engaging the outer coned end of the
shaft-engaging member of the packing is extended beyond the point of
contact with the packing and engages the shaft so as to shear the dust
or oil film.
The ring is provided upon its inner edge with a wall or skirt of
frustoconoidal form, which at its outer or smaller end is bevelled to
form a knife A 45 edge which engages tbe shaft at the end of the
leather and so prevents the ingress of the dirt or other undesirable
matter or shears the oil film to prevent egress of the same Said wall
also acts to press i O the end of the leather upon the shaft.
In order that the invention may be the better understood, drawings are
appended in which:lPrice 1 A¦-l Fig 1 is a side view of the device.
Fig 2 is a transverse section 55 Fig 3 is a plan to a reduced scale.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in connection with which it
will be understood that the terms " horizontal ", " vertical " and
similar expressions are 60 designed to apply to the respective parts
as shown in the drawings, a indicates the outer case or cage
comprising an annular member of L-shaped cross-sectional outline 65 b
indicates the packing member in the form of a leather ring of L-shaped
crosssectional outline, the member engaging the shaft y being bevelled
as shown at The horizontal member of the packing 70 ring b is tightly
pressed against the inner surface of the horizontal limb of the outer
case by means of the washer c resting upon the upper surface of said
horizontal member 75 The washer is held in position by means of the
inverted L-shaped ring d, the vertical limb of which is pressed
tightly against the washer by spinning or turning thereover the edge a
2 of the vertical 80 member of the case a.
A ring is provided, havin a fiat portion e and a frusto-conoidal skirt
el, the smaller or outer end of which engages and bears upon the outer
surface of the 8 X free end of the shaft-engaging member of the
leather, said skirt being extended beyond the point of contact with
the packing and the extreme outer end being levelled so tblat it lies
in a plane parallel 9 g with that of tbe inner surface of the leather
t) and bears against the shaft or other body passing throug'h the
device, so as to shear the oil or dust film and so prevent the ingress
of undesirable matter 95 Interposed between the outer or upper sarface
of the ring e and the inner surface of the horizontal limb of the ring
d is an undulated spring which presses the ring e axially so that the
skirt el presses i 0, upon the bevelled part of the packinog ring.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our
said invention and in what manner the same is to Price 45 As -5
