412,144. Mercury - vapour rectifiers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., 28,
Kingsway, London. Jan. 31, 1934, No. 3291. Convention date, Jan. 31,
1933. [Class 39 (i).] In a glass bulb metal -vapour rectifier provided
with a pivotally mounted ignition electrode 8 which is adapted to be
raised by an electromagnet through an armature 4, the point of
connection between the electrode and the armature is screened from the
arc by a shield 12 which, preferably, consists of a flange on the
glass covering 11 of the electrode.

We, THE El GLISH ELECTRIC COMPANY L Imi T 3 i, of Queen's House, 28,
Kingsway, London, W C 2, a Company registered under British Law, do
hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what manner the
same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained
in and by the following statement:This invention relates to a
mercuryvapour
glass-bulb
ignition electrode which in
mercury and which is lifted
the purpose of starting the
movably ID mounted arc-starting device for
rectifiers having a pivotally mounted
its position of rest dips into the cathode
out of the latter by an electro-magnet for
arc.
According to the invention the point at which the armature of the
elect Tomagnet is secured to the pivoted ignition electrode is
screened off from the chamber of the Tectifier and thus shielded from
the arc The screening element is preferably a flange located at the
upper end of and formed integrally with la glass covering which is
placed in known manner over the ignition electrode.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows
an ignition electrode 8 whose end 7 is immersed in the mercury and has
an insulation tutbe 11 formed by la glass covering, the said member 8
carrying a shield 12 located under the armature 4 of the ope Tating
electro-magnet and being the terminating lange of the upper end of the
glass
covering
11 The upper portion of the glass flange is
advantageously somewhat wider than its lower portion in order that the
point of articulation between the fork carrying the armature 4 and the
ignition electrode is adeqiiate Ty shielded from the arc by the flange
and adequate protection is provided against the risk of the starting
of an auxiliary arc at the said point.

claim is:1 A pivotally mounted dipping ignition electrode for a glass bulb
mercury vapour rectifier adapted to be Taised by the action of an
electromagnet on an armature carried by the electrode, characterised
by an arc shield screening the point of connection between the
electrode and the armature from the arc.
2 An electrode according to claim 1 in which the said arc shield is an
integral flange iat theupper end of a glass tuibe covering the
electrode in known manner.
3 An electrode according to claim 2 in which the upper portion of the
said arc shield is wider than the lower portion thereof.
4 A pivotally mounted dipping electrode for a glass bulb mercury
vapour rectifier with an arc shield substantially as and for the
purpose described. Dated this 3rd day of January, 1934. p.p the
