554 SPECIAL ARTICLE WINNERS OF THE 1985 SLIDE COMPETITION SIDNEY BLOCK and the AUDIOVISUAL AIDS SUBCOMMITTEE OF THE ARA EDUCATION COMMITTEE The American Rheumatism Association Audiovisual Aids Subcommittee is pleased to present the winners of the 1985 Slide Competition. The annual competition is part of the ongoing effort to improve the 1981 Revised Clinical Slide Collection on the Rheumatic Diseases. As a result of the generous cooperation of the members of the ARA in submitting slides and radiographs, the first supplement to the 1981 revision was produced and made available in 1985. Members of the Audiovisual Aids Subcommittee of the American Rheumatism Association Education Committee: William Beetham, MD; Sidney Block, MD, Chair; Joseph Croft, MD; William Ginsburg, MD; Timothy Harrington, MD; Bernhard Singsen, MD; Ann McGuire. Submitted for publication December 1 1 , 1985; accepted December 12, 1985. The 1985 Supplement contains 40 new slides, 28 representing new topics and the remainder considered to be improvements on earlier material. The new topics include subacute cutaneous lupus, photosensitivity reaction, periungual telangiectasia, subcutaneous calcinosis, palatal vasculitis, Kawasaki disease, calcium oxalate crystals, septic discitis, herniated disc, and thyroid acropachy, among others. In making these selections, the current members of the Subcommittee sought to maintain the high standard for selection and technical reproduction set by prior members. Included with the 1985 Supplement of slides is a set of 8 half-hour cassette tapes providing an audio rendition of the written syllabus. The cost of production of the audiotapes was minimal and did not appreciably increase the cost of the 1985 Supplement. The Subcommittee invites comments from the members regarding the usefulness of the audiotapes. It also continues to urge the members to participate in the Collection’s evolution by submitting slides and radiographs for future supplements. All unused materials will be returned. Accepted materials will be acknowledged appropriately in the syllabus and the donors will be given extra first-quality reproductions of their slides. Submit materials to Sidney R.
