2005 Tantalum I 5200 08- 018 Synthesis and Characterization of a Novel Tantalum Chalcogen-Rich Molecular Cluster with Square Planar Metal Core. — Black single crystals of the new compound Ta4Se 9I8 are obtained in 87% yield by reaction of Ta, Se, and I2 (1:2.2:1 molar ratio, 300 °C, evacuated glass tube, 3 d). Ta4Se9I8 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pna21 with Z = 4. The Ta atoms form a square with four Se2 ligands bridging the Ta—Ta edges and one Se atom capping the square. Each Ta atom has two terminal iodine atoms. The compound is diamagnetic and has only two electrons for metal—metal bonding. — (SOKOLOV*, M. N.; GUSHCHIN, A. L.; VIROVETS, A. V.; PERESYPKINA, E.
