GARMENT ' " ' Morris Kahn, Newburgh, N. Y. Application August 2, 1947, Serial No. 765,702 2' Claims. I (01. 2.473) I 1 This invention relates to ladies’ garments, and more particularly to an improved undergarment or slip. ' ' An object of the invention is the provision of a slip formed from a minimum number of pat tern pieces, and having a minimum number of seams in order to prevent ripping and to gen erally impart durability and good wearing quali ties to the slip. _A further object of the invention is the pro vision of a slip having a unitary front skirt and bodice panel, the upper portion of which is formed with a pair of lateral extensions terminating out; wardly under the armpit of the wearer to form an upper side seam, and terminating downwardly at the waist of the wearer, each of said exten sions having also an inner edge spaced from a respective edge of the main portion of the front panel in the blank, each of which inner edges‘ is stitched to a respective edge of the main por tion of the front panel to form the breast por tion of the slip, thereby simultaneously impart ing strength and improved body-?tting contour to the slip. ' ' ' Another object of the invention is the pro vision of a slip of the character described hav ing an rear skirt panel cut on the bias with re spect to the median line of said panel and cut on the straight with respect to the substantially vertical side edges of the panel to provide desired resiliency at the central seat portion of the‘ slip and to provide a smooth, straight ?t at the front portion of the slip where each vertical side edge of the rear skirt is stitched to a respective edge of the front panel of the slip. . The foregoing objects, as well as additional objects and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent in the» course ofthe following de ' Fig. 8 is a plan view of a blank forming the upper rear portion ofithe slip.‘ ' ' The blank forming the front panel of the slip is indicated at It)! in Fig. 6 and is defined by a _ lower edge H and a pair of substantially linear side edges [2 preferably converging slightly up wardly to the waist portion of the blank Ill, from which region said side edges diverge slightly to terminate at a pair of lateral extensions “la in tegral with front panel or blank l0. Each of said lateral extensions is de?ned by a downwardly extending inner edge l3 diverging from the up-_ per portion of side edge I2, edges 12 and I3 be ing stitched together to form the breast portion? of the slip; a lower edge I4 constituting a part of the side waistline seam; a side edge I5 con-' stituting part of the side seam of the slip; and an upper curved edge ' I6 constituting the front armhole edge of the slip. The central upper V-shaped edge I‘! extends between the ends of edges l6 and constitutes ‘the V-neck of the ‘slip. The blank I9 is preferably cut on the straight to'pro vide a smooth ?t at the front of the slip. The circularly-cut panel blank 2E}! (see Fig. '7'). forming the side and rear skirt portions is de ?ned by a lower circular edge 2|, a pair of sub» stantially linear side edges 22 and upper edges 23‘ converging at a central point 24 through which runs the median line A-A. An extremely im portant feature of the invention resides in form ing blank 20‘ in such a manner that it is cut on the bias with respect to the median line A--A and out substantially onv the straight with respect to each of the side edges 22 to secure a fullness in the lower rear skirt portion and to achieve two desirable effects: 1. Resiliency is provided at the central seat portion of the slip where stretching is mostly needed and which is in a bias area. tailed description taken‘ in connection with the ' 2. Side edges 22 are cut on the straight to keep accompanying drawing which illustrates a pre 40 the slip smooth and ?at at the front when said ferred embodiment of the invention, and-where side edges are joined to the upwardly convergent 1n: portions of side edges I 2 of the front panel Ill. The ?nal blank 30 (see Fig. 8) forming the upper rear portion of the slip is preferably, 55 though not necessarily, cut on the bias to give 2,527,137 freedom and facilitate breathing. Said blank 30 is formed with a central upper V-edge 3| con stituting the low-cut back of the garment, down wardly divergent edges 32 completing the arm hole of the slip, side edges 33 and lower edges inner edge joined to the upper portion of a re spective side edge of said front panel to form the breast portion of said slip, a circularly-cut panel forming the rear and side skirt .portions of said slip, said skirt panel being cut on the bias with respect to the longitudinal median line 34. Each of the side edges 33 is joined to a re spective side edge I 5 of each lateral extension thereof, and an upper rear panel having a lower I Ila of front panel I0, to constitute a side under edge joined to the upper edge of said skirt panel, arm seam of the slip, and each of the lower edges each side edge of said upper rear panel being 34 is joined to a respective upper edge 23 of skirt 10 coextensive with and joined to a respective side panel 20 to complete the back of the waistline of edge of each lateral extension of the front panel the slip. The garment may be completed by to form an underarm side seam which extends providing conventional shoulder straps 40 ex substantially vertically downward from the re tending between front panel l0 and upper rear gion of the armpit to the waistline of the slip, panel 30. the lower edge of each lateral extension being While I have shown the upper parts of panels joined to the forward portion of a respective up l0 and 30 as being provided with a V-neck form, per edge of said skirt panel. it will be understood that the built-up shoulder 2. A slip comprising a front panel extending portions Fla and 3m may be omitted and any for the entire length of the slip and having a pair other form of neckline may be imparted to the v of side edges, a pair of lateral extensions formed garment without in any way departing from the integrally with ‘the upper portion of said front scope of the appended claims. panel, each of said lateral extensions being de From the ‘foregoing it is apparent that a slip ?ned by a side edge extending vertically down has been provided having a front panel com ward from approximately the armpit of the prising 'a bodice portion and a skirt portion in 25 wearer to the waistline of the slip and a lower tegral therewith to present a smooth, vneat ap edge forming a portion of the waistline of the pearance at the front of the slip, to prevent rip slip, each of said lateral extensions having an ping and to impart strength to the slip. A sec inner edge joined to the upper portion of a re ond panel forming the rear and side skirt por spective side edge of said front panel to form tions of the slip has been further provided cut the breast cups of said slip, each side edge of the in such a manner as to be cut on "the bias with front panel extending upwardly from the bot respect to the median line of said panel and on tom edge of the slip to the apex of a correspond the straight with respect to each of the side ing ‘breast cup a skirt panel having a pair of edges thereof. This latter feature provides for substantially vertical edges and a pair of in stretching at the central seat portion of the slip Where it is most required, and simultaneously affords a smooth ?t at the front of the slip where the side edges of the skirt panel are joined to the respective side edges of the front lpanel. Be cause the slip is made of few parts, three in this case, there are few seams and less chance of ripping. Since certain modi?cations may 'be made in the garment of the invention without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the foregoing description and shown in the accompanying drawing be in terpreted merely as ‘illustrative and not in a lim iting sense. Having thus described my invention, what I ' claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: wardly inclined, convergent upper edges which de?ne the waistline of the slip, said skirt panel being cut on the bias with respect to the longi tudinal median line ‘thereof and on the straight with respect to each of said vertical edges, and an upper rear panel having a, lower edge joined to said pair of convergent waistline edges of said skirt panel, each vertical edge of said skirt panel being joined to the lower portion of a respective side edge of said front panel, each side edge of said upper rear panel being coextensive with and joined to a respective side edge of each lateral extension to form an underarm side seam which extends substantially vertically downward from the region of the armpit to the waistline of the slip, the lower edge of each lateral exten sion being joined to the forward .portion of a re spective upper waistline edge of said skirt panel.
