London has a lot of places of
interest
Look at the pictures of London
and remember what article is
used with the names of different
views
The British Museum
The River Thames
The Telecom Tower
The National Gallery
The London Underground
The Monument To Admiral

The Houses of Parliament
Tower Bridge
So the definite article is used
with the names of:
Museums
Rivers
Towers
Galleries
Undergrounds
Monuments
Theatres
Hotels
Restaurants
Cinemas
No article is used with the names
of:
Zoos
Parks and gardens
Squares
Abbeys and churches
Palaces
Castles
Bridges
Streets
It is important to know
Many names are two words: Kennedy
Airport, Cambridge University
The first word is usually the name of a
person (Kennedy) or a place (Cambridge)
and the article is not used with the names
like this
But: the White House, the Royal Palace
(white and royal are not names)
It is important to know:
We say the before the names of places,
buildings and so on with of:
The Bank of England
The Houses of Parliament
The Great Wall of China
It is important to know
Many shops, restaurants, hotels, banks are
named after people who started them. These
names end in s or ’s.We do not use the with
these names:
Shops - Harrods
Hotels - Claridge’s
It is important to know:
Churches are usually named after saints
(St=saint) and are used without any article.
